About us
Mid-Atlantic Technical Rescue was founded in 2009 based upon requests and interest from friends, co-workers, and colleagues from around the central Maryland area. There was a need for advanced technical rescue training beyond that which was being offered locally by state and local fire departments and emergency services agencies. Having trained many individuals through state and local agencies, local and multi-jurisdictional drills, and simple in-house training, we were asked and encouraged to start this technical rescue training company by our prior students, fellow instructors, and others.
Our Philosophy
Our basic philosophy is based on thinking outside the proverbial box and training at a level well above that which you intend to operate on a real rescue incident. It is further strengthened by the addition of "technical knowledge", including some basic physics principals, and a greater understanding of the equipment used in heavy rescue operations. By adhering to these simple principles, our students are afforded the opportunity to learn a great deal about technical rescue while participating in difficult, truly “technical”, and fun rescue scenarios. In most cases, our training scenarios are much harder than anything you will face in the real world, therefore making your everyday rescues, even the tougher ones, seem easy. At the same time, we often duplicate real world incidents for a more realistic experience.
Services we Offer
We currently offer 3 basic services. First and foremost, we teach technical rescue courses. Our focus since inception has been on Advanced Vehicle Stabilization and Extrication, which is the title of our most popular course. It is sub-titled "Concepts and Applications for Heavy Vehicles", as the emphasis is on large and heavy vehicles such as tractor trailers, dump trucks, cement mixers, etc. Click here for our "Courses" page for additional information, or visit the home page for pictures of recent courses. We can also teach courses in almost any of the other areas of technical rescue, and some areas of industry as well, including Cell Tower Climbing and Rescue, Industrial Rigging and Load Handling, Confined Space for General Industry and Construction, etc. Some of our industrial clients are large, global, international companies. We recently brought a new course to the market, "Truly Technical Rescue: Math and Physics for Technical Rescuers". This has been a very popular course and so far each one has been "sold out".
Our second service is that of an equipment distributor. We attempt to keep these services "separated" so to speak. When we show up to teach a course, that is exactly what we do...we do not try to sell products through our courses or techniques. But we found that many of our customers would come to us after courses and ask where they could find various rescue and rigging equipment. In an effort to meet the needs of these customers, we started by partnering with our long time friends at BA Products and Rock Exotica, and eventually many others came on line. Now we can offer a wide range of heavy rigging and technical rope rescue products and brands. Because sales is not our primary function, we are often able to bring these product lines to you at prices substantially below normal retail value (where allowed by manufacturer regulations). There are links to all of these manufacturers websites on our equipment page.
Finally, in addition to those services, we also offer various "plastic" products such as the infamous "poly box" used by many departments to carry and store rigging gear and other equipment on their fire apparatus. We operate a small fabrication shop and can make just about any size box that suits you.
Consulting and Other Services
We can also offer other custom services such as consulting, scenario design, equipment purchasing and apparatus layout services, etc. We also conduct and participate in various Rescue Research and Development projects and can assist you with yours. Whatever your technical rescue need, please feel free to contact us if you need assistance. We welcome the opportunity to assist you, as well as learn new things ourselves.
References: What Others Say
Take a peak at some of what others had to say about our courses on our "Testimonials" page. You can also visit our "Clients" page to see what Fire Departments and Corporations we have trained. If you prefer, you can contact us if you would like us to put you in touch with someone who can give a different form of reference for us. Everyone sees things from a different perspective, and we certainly understand that, so whatever your preference for references, we can accommodate you. So, if you would rather talk to those who have actually hosted us and let them be the judge, we can make that happen.
Instructors
Instructors are the backbone of any educational or training company. Our instructors are hand picked from various fire departments and technical rescue teams in the Mid-Atlantic area. While instructor biographies and company history doesn't tell the whole story about how well a particular company delivers their training programs, we realize it is still important to most people to know who is training them. You can click here or on the link below for a brief bio of our instructors.
